Wittgenstein's Nephew Analysis
Synopsis[ edit ] The author narrates moments of his friendship with Wittgenstein s nephew Wittgenstein, "nephew" actually son of a first cousin of the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein not to be confused with the latter's brother, the pianist Paul Wittgenstein.
The title is a reference wittgenstein s nephew Diderot's Rameau's Nephew who also deals with the eccentric nephew of a preeminent cultural figure.
If Paul was healthy, he could be found nightly at the opera. Conductors feared his presence on opening nights, since his derisive whistling could turn the audience against their performance.
The illness landed him in the hospital with a straitjacket in a room with other howling patients. The tame wittgenstein s nephew mind can only label Paul with psychological categories and strap him to a table.
The deepening of the friendship occurs when Bernhard and Wittgenstein are hospitalized in the same Vienna complex.
